This was the first open meeting of the section for
the 2005/2006 academic year. An introductory talk was given by the
executive committee outlining the role of the AES and the plans of the
student section for the coming year.
A talk was given by electronics student Lewis Saunders, about his sandwich year at a recording studio in Wales.
Wednesday 25 May 2005 (30 people attending)
This was the inaugural meeting of the UK's first
student section of the AES. First to speak was Jerry Ibbotson, creative
director for the York based computer game programming company, Media
Mill. He spoke of his career as a journalist at the BBC, how he moved
from there to starting his own company, and what made him choose
computer games. Jerry then demonstrated two stunning animated clips for
which he had done the sound, used as promotional videos for forthcoming
games. When the audience had lifted there jaws from the floor after
seeing the videos, Jerry fielded a barrage of questions which he
graciously answered.
The second speaker for the meeting was Jamie Searle,
a broadcast engineer for BBC Radio York. He outlined how his career
went from working in the manufacturing department of BBC equipment, to
becoming a broadcast engineer for 20 years. Jamie spoke of how the
equipment needed by a radio station has changed over the years, and how
his role has been to incorporate the new equipment into the old system.
Props included a portable reel-to-reel recorder, to show students how
journalists used to have to record interviews. A large number of
questions also followed Jamie's talk, and he was more then willing to
speak thoroughly about any aspect of his role.
Both speakers talked in great depth, totally willing
to give away the secrets of audio success they had gathered throughout
their long careers with audio.
